Timing chain 2000 chevy s 10?

i have a 2000 chevy s10 2.2l 4 cylinder engine. the timing chain in it is bad and the truck will not start infact when i turn the key over it has a popping sound through the intake i have been told it was the timing chain does this sound correct and if it is a broken timing chain would this crush the valves in this year of a truck? if so i live in georgia does anyone know where i could buy a 4.3 engine or a 2,2 engine online.
